▼a International aid agencies and policymakers over the last several decades have sought strategies and policies to support education for girls throughout the world. Despite significant interventions from world aid organizations, non-governmental agencies, and individual countries, more than half of children not attending school are girls. Girls' transition rate from primary to secondary education has been especially alarming in sub-Saharan Africa: close to 50% of children do not matriculate from primary to secondary school in Africa. In some countries, the numbers have been even higher. As of 2013, less than 20% of Tanzanian children continued on to the secondary level of education (UNESCO, 2013). In this dissertation, I explored factors and processes at an all-girls' boarding school in rural Tanzania that supported students' high performance on national exams as well as high retention and graduation rates. Drawing upon in-depth interviews, this research illustrated how teachers, administrators, and graduates of this school defined, approached, and made sense of factors that made this particular girls' education program a success. |
