520 ▼a This thesis reports results related to or motivated by the problem of finding a weakly coupled string description of pure Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit. First, we postulate an ansatz describing the worldsheet dynamics and matter content of confining strings, the Axionic String Ansatz. Taking this ansatz as a starting point, we proceed through a semiclassical calculation to find the expected quantum numbers for the glueball spectra of Yang-Mills in 3 spacetime dimensions. This spectrum is compared with that found from lattice gauge theory simulations and a good agreement is found. Second, motivated by recent results on the worldsheet scattering of long confining strings, we look into the relation between two ways proposed in the literature to produce one-parameter families of quantum field theories: gravitational dressing and the TT짱 deformation. Building upon previous work, we demonstrate these two to be equivalent by showing that the deformed theories can be described by coupling the undeformed theory to a gravitational sector. Finally, we apply these results to the problem of calculating finite volume spectra from worldsheet scattering amplitudes. This allows to calculate the effect on the spectrum of confining flux tubes coming from non-integrable contributions to the worldsheet scattering. The results of these calculations are compared with the available lattice data.
