▼a This dissertation draws insights from John Dewey, B.R. Ambedkar, and Brown v. Board of Education in order to offer an original account of the compatibility of coercive state action with a radical vision of democracy. Through new readings of these three intertwined figures, I articulate and defend what I call directed association: the idea that socially-oppressed groups can utilize the coercive instruments of the state in order to create the conditions for democracy understood not just as a form of government but as 'associated life'.The dissertation is divided into five chapters. Chapter I begins by explaining, in broad terms, the theoretical tension between social inequality and democracy. I then review several prominent theories of democracy that both take the radical aspiration to collective self-government seriously and critique or minimize the place of state action against social inequality. I argue that the dissertation provides a necessary corrective to these theories before introducing the project's sources, main arguments, and methodology.Chapter II begins by positioning Dewey as the inaugurator of a unique and influential way of conceptualizing democracy. I then examine the philosopher's theory of democratic change |
