520 ▼a Background: Healthcare expenditures associated with healthcare utilization (HCU) in cancer care continue to be a public health challenge. By 2020, cancer care expenditures are expected to exceed $174 billion, representing an estimated 2-fold increase from 2010 estimates (Mariotto, Yabroff, Shao, Feuer, & Brown, 2011). People with mental health disorders (MHDs) or substance use disorders (SUDs) and cancer have significantly higher rates of emergency room, hospital, and intensive care admissions. Furthermore, socioeconomic status (SES) can affect healthcare utilization. For persons receiving care in an integrated safety-net health care system, MHDs and SUDs may have a significant effect on health care utilization among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), where alcohol and tobacco use are common risk factors.Purpose: Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the association between mental health, substance abuse, HNC stage at diagnosis and healthcare utilization. The specific aims of this study in a sample of patients diagnosed with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma are: 1) Identify the association between MHDs, SUDs, and cancer stage at diagnosis controlling for demographics, average annual household income, insurance status, physical comorbidities, tobacco use and clinical variables of cancer treatment and location
