520 ▼a This dissertation examines the nature of erotic love through a close analysis of the notion of eros according to Emmanuel Levinas, Georges Bataille, Plato, and also the metaphysical status of love in the Song of Songs. By using the symbolism of the mask, the intent is to show the inadequacy of the tragic and violent eros in Bataille's work. By focusing on Levinas' unique philosophy, the objective of this dissertation is to demonstrate the primacy of ethics over chaotic aesthetics, and to assert that an authentic erotic relation must first originate in a dialogic, face-to-face encounter.
