▼a Healthy community development corporations require a sufficiently stable funding environment to initiate operations and expand them over time. Thus it is important to consider an entrepreneurial set of goals and practices to be successful and achieve longevity. This in-depth qualitative case study of a social enterprise based on solar energy production at the Centennial Parkside CDC in Philadelphia was guided by the following research question: How can a community based organization use local solar energy production as a revenue source to build sustainable resource capacity for the organization and support community development in a context characterized by low-income residents and a contrarian regulatory environment? Answering this research question provides a case-study of a more general problem: How can community based organizations sustain themselves through business models that align with their values and produce a product that advances the missions of local businesses, institutions, and households? Through an action research approach and drawing on public policy data, in-depth key informant interviews, participant observation, and document review I inform the answers to these research questions. My empirical findings point to three important factors when considering how to effectively introduce solar energy production as a sustainable revenue source for community development:1.Organizational capacity, 2.The ability of the organization to gain the trust of the local community and other stakeholders, and 3.The progression of public policy that supports community solar energy. |
