520 ▼a Synthetic organic chemists have developed powerful methods to create carbon-carbon bonds, such as metal-catalyzed cross coupling reactions. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions are essential in a synthetic chemist's toolbox to create Csp2 centers. However, Csp3 couplings remain limited due to undesired 棺-H elimination or sluggish transmetallation with organometallic reagents. This work utilizes a variant of the Heck reaction, the reductive-Heck reaction, to create the Csp3 centers. We investigated and gained insight into the important variables that affect relative rates of organometallic processes of the intermolecular reductive-Heck catalytic cycle using design of experiments and traditional once-variable-at-time optimization methods. After encountering chemoselective issues in organic solvents, we utilized water as a solvent to increase the effective concentration of the reaction and address the fast rate of early transmetallation. In the last portion of this work, a chemoselective reductive-Heck reaction catalyzed by Pd nanoparticles was discovered. This work highlights the underexplored intermolecular reductive-Heck reaction with homogeneous and heterogeneous Pd catalysis and challenges to outcompete 棺-H elimination to create new reaction pathways.
