520 ▼a This dissertation consists of three essays relating to the economics of tropical forests and land-use change. Policy makers are often not fully aware of the importance of tropical forests for promoting economic development and mitigating climate change. In this dissertation, I attempt to bridge this knowledge gap by discussing how industrial organization determines land use and agricultural production, by exploring the cost and potential to mitigate climate change via large-scale tropical reforestation, and by examining how tropical storms impact economic production as well as if the presence of intact forests mitigate storm damages.
