▼a This dissertation is about the nature of our mental states and mental content. I argue that some of our propositional attitudes exhibit cross-attitudinal dependence. That is, their content cannot be specifed without considering the content of distinct attitudes. I develop a two-dimensional framework in which this dependence can be captured, and use it to solve a variety of puzzles and problems. I begin by considering the way in which desire states are parasitic on belief. Then I discuss counterfactual attitudes such as imagining, wishing and dreaming. I end by turning to some open questions in this area, and topics for further research. |
