요약 | Masculine Sexual Entitlement (MSE) represents an important yet relatively understudied construct in the literature. The present study sought to better articulate MSE through the development of a survey. Following best practices in scale development, a thorough review of the literature and existing measures was conducted. Next the construct was operationalized and defined by the author with 6 hypothesized subscales that were postulated to comprise MSE. Items representing these six sub-dimensions were developed with input from content experts (N = 9) and focus groups of undergraduate emerging adult men (N = 9). The initial 90 items were administered to a preliminary sample (N = 281) of self-identified undergraduate men. Exploratory factor analysis indicated a 5-factor structure (i.e., Prioritizing Sexual Needs of Self, Peer Norms, Sexual Deception and Pressure, Essentialist Gender Attitudes About Men in Relationships and Sexuality, and Minimizing and Dismissing Problematic Behavior). Item analysis was conducted and items were removed based on best practices suggested by DeVellis (2017). This yielded a 40-item survey (i.e., the MSEN40) with five factors that was administered to a second sample (N = 210) of self-identified undergraduate men. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated inadequate fit for the 40-item scale, however fit could be improved by reducing scale length to 25 items loading on the five subscales. Internal consistency reliability, construct validity, group differences, and the instrument's ability to predict self-reported violent behaviors were explored with this sample. The MSEN40 demonstrated strong correlations with related measures (e.g., Sexual Narcissism Scale, Male Role Norms Inventory-Short Form) and an absence of correlation with unrelated constructs. Through structural equation modeling, preliminary support was found for a second order, 5-factor scale with 25 items (i.e., the MSEN25) although these findings need to be replicated in an additional sample. The MSEN25 demonstrated similar external validity correlations to those found with the MSEN40 construct validity analyses. Additionally, across both samples, the MSEN25 demonstrated adequate internal consistency for the scale overall (慣 = .90 and .90) and for the 5-item subscales (i.e., 慣's ranged = .71-.82). Future directions and implications for the measure were discussed. |
