요약The connection between travel and tourism (T&T) and education/learning is presumed to be intuitive, yet the formal research and practical relationships have been shallow, leading to gaps in the literature and practice in the tourism industry and education abroad (EA). Little research has been conducted on, for example, the influence on or overlaps between T&T and EA which involves both travel and education/learning. Thus, the overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine interrelationships between T&T and education/learning in the EA context with the intent of contributing to theory and practice.Three separate studies, which built on the questions raised in each preceding study, addressed the study purpose. In Study 1 a survey was used to ascertain students' travel- and education-based motivations and expectations for their EA experience and to document students' motivation-expectation profiles. A principle axis factor analysis resulted in three motivation factors (i.e., "Learn a Language," "New and Exciting Experiences," "Academic Stimulation and Achievement") and three expectation factors ("Travel to Experience the Local," "Free Time and Social Weekends," "Instructor and Classroom Experience"). A K-means analysis presented a 3-cluster solution, i.e. three types of EA students. Followup ANOVAs indicated that significant differences existed between students who were motivated by and expected differing levels of fun, excitement, travel and educational aspects of EA. In Study 2 a constructivist grounded theory design was implemented to examine students' meaning making while on EA. Results demonstrated that students interpreted their EA experience through four meaning making structures: Novelty, Actually Being, Blending or Securing, and Living in a State of Awe. The Awe-in- Awesome Framework was proposed based on the results. Lastly, how students perceived and negotiated their student-tourist identity during EA was examined in study 3. Results indicated that students were either ambivalent or discomfited when faced with the denotative meanings of the word "tourist." Students also invoked a form of reappropriation to navigate the student-tourist identity. In summary, the results reinforced the notion that important and viable relationships exist between T&T and formal educational travel. Recommendations regarding future research were included as were comments regarding their potential application in an EA context.
