요약This dissertation argues that the texts of Ellen and William Craft, William Dean Howells, Henry Adams, and Pauline Hopkins on which this project focuses employ realist narrative strategies and belong loosely to a body of work or a literary-historical epoch termed realist. Yet these texts also rely on performance-based energies in conflict with the historiographical allegiances of realism. Realist narrative has been viewed as a product of "interplay" at the "intersection of contrasting codes" by Marshall Brown (231, 233), and similarly George Levine asserts that realism posits mixed conditions, offering more nuanced conceptions of realism (4). Brown's theory of contrasting codes frames my placing of two different entities, cultural entertainment and American realism, into conversation to exemplify realism's generic struggles and dependence on the seemingly oppositional space of a live production. I also expand on Levine's identification of "mixed conditions" as I see performance sites playing into the mixed outcome of the realist novel, altering any type of monological realism that might otherwise have been attainable. These conflicts give way to "misdirected realism" to account for the anomalies present as a result of the performance site's influence. Misdirected realism, which will be an umbrella term for the sub-genre of realism I see stemming from the novels' translation of a performance site, deviates from traditional realism in its pedagogical effects on rethinking race, class, gender and other issues and concerns. Misdirected realism challenges preconceptions of realist texts, repositions a performance site that adds to the misdirection present in the novel, and establishes openings for further work on the relationship between cultural entertainment and American realist novels. Although "misdirect" might imply a negative implication-"to direct wrongly"- the term is also rich with subversive potential, as in "to direct one's efforts [or] attention away from the proper or intended target." I consider the "intended target" to be realism as Howells typically classified the genre. More precisely, misdirected realism plays with realist tenets to redirect readers' attentions to new perspectives regarding the agency of female salon hostesses or the authority of African American narrative voices. Misdirection also stems from the popular entertainments that Howells condemned for their artificiality, as each of my performance sites engages in misdirection. Misdirection affords realist authors flexibility in their techniques and strategies for exploring issues of authorship and privileging a previously marginalized perspective. The misdirections multiply further as I chart authors' crisscrossing of genres in unexpected ways as well as characters' crossings of gender, race, class and cultural boundaries. To explore all the misdirections at work, my methodology consists of treating a select but varied set of examples so as to afford a deeper analysis into the interdymamics at play. To that end, I have carefully paired a single author and his/her/their text with an historically grounded account of a specific performance site influencing the novel's formal and thematic properties to offer a new perspective that takes into account the effects of merging the two modes. The cultural entertainments that underlie my literary discussions, the British abolition lecture circuit, the Howellsian farce, the American salon, and the black abolitionist panorama, produce generic hybridity within all of the texts and amount, part and parcel, to my categorization of these novels as a subgenre of realism as well as realist(esque) according the greater and lesser ways in which they challenge foundational tenets of realism. This subgenre of misdirected realism, to be expounded on in the dissertation that follows, reflects the intricate and interdynamic ways in which various performance sites shape the content, writing style, and/or the form of the American realist novel.
