요약Following the 2008 financial crisis, public trust in social institutions, such as banks, government agencies, and news media, has fallen to record lows across the world. At the same time, the popularity of digital platforms, such as Uber in the sharing economy, cryptocurrency exchanges in the realm of blockchain technologies, and Facebook in social media, has exponentially risen to replace the role of social institutions as mediators of social trust. Citing the cooperative potential of distributed networks, these platforms have in different ways promised that greater decentralization entails greater democratization. However, rather than to fulfill their democratic potential, these platforms have often focused on capitalizing on public trust and transforming user data into corporate profit. Thus, a crucial question remains open: how, if at all, can these platforms truly help create new forms of trust and achieve greater social cooperation? By focusing on a series of examples in Mexico, this project describes how users there have helped transform and, in turn, been transformed by digital platforms as they attempt to procure new sociotechnical means of protection against crime, violence, and political corruption. The first case describes the experience of a group of Uber drivers who, given constant physical threats from passengers and taxi unions, have come together to challenge Uber's entrepreneurial rhetoric. The second case tells the story of Bitso, the largest cryptocurrency exchange platform in Mexico, as it has defied right-wing political ideals around blockchain technology in order to help defend the national financial system against pervasive cybersecurity risks. The third case follows the actions of social activists involved in the movements #YoSoy132 and #WeAreAllAyotzinapa as they use social media to contend not only against government-sponsored "fake news," but also against a long history of media censorship and political violence. Characterizing these emerging forms of social cooperation as built on "radical trust," this project examines the political potential found in the ongoing recursive transformations of digital platforms in Mexico and describes a series of possibilities for combining pressing local economic needs for corporate-driven technological innovation with a greater demand for global collectivity and social cooperation.
