요약 | The American public is amid a communication revolution with the advent of social media. Social media is an innovated tool that is at the forefront of linking people to one another. With over 67% of all adults in the nation utilizing a social media site, it has developed into society's primary resource in the information dissemination realm. The purpose of this study was to recognize and categorized the resources necessary for increasing law enforcement's engagement with the public with the use of social media. This study used Clark and Estes' (2008) gap analysis framework to evaluate police departments' social media administrators to determine whether any gaps exist in knowledge, motivation and organizational influences that would affect community engagement via social media. It sought to learn what social media platforms police departments are using as a community policing outreach program to communicate with the public, rebuild trust, increase transparency, and create positive relationships within their communities. This study also set out to learn what type of strategy police departments were employing to garner the most engagements and whether their engagement with the public could be increased. The study consisted of a literature review, qualitative interviews, and document analysis to evaluate how social media administrators could increase their engagement with the public. As a result, this study revealed needs relating to knowledge and organizational influences that can affect increasing public engagement with the use of social media platforms. |
