요약Intercellular bridges connect germline cells during gametogenesis in males and females. They form as a consequence of incomplete cytokinesis at the end of cell division leaving daughter cells connected by a stable intercellular bridge. The function of ring canals (RCs) is best understood in Drosophila females where RCs are required for the movement of cytoplasm from the nurse cells into growing oocytes, but little is known about the role of RCs and intercellular movement of cytoplasmic components during spermatogenesis. Here I show movement of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and endogenous proteins through RCs using live imaging of stages from two-cell diploid spermatogonia through clusters of 64 post-meiotic spermatids, demonstrating persistent connectivity between the cells during spermatogenesis. Loss of the fusome, a large cytoplasmic structure that extends through the RCs and is known to be important during oogenesis, has minimal impact RC development or movement of cytoplasmic GFP during spermatogenesis. Using live imaging in post-meiotic cells, I demonstrate that proteins can be shared between haploid cells. Together these results reveal extensive sharing of cytoplasmic information that supports a role for ring canals throughout sperm development.
