| 요약 | Thousands of youth enter juvenile justice facilities each year. Once these youth are released from the facility, they often return to school with few beneficial supports in place. Considering the adverse academic outcomes (e.g., high dropout rates) many of these youth face, it is important to consider the process of youth transitioning back to school and home after placement in juvenile justice facilities. This dissertation will begin with a literature review that will examine the role of the juvenile justice facility in a detained youth's academic career. Additionally, the role of the community in the reentry process will be explored. Furthermore, the role of schools, both from the youth and school personnel perspective will be synthesized. The literature review will conclude with suggestions for research directions with specific research questions. The following portion of the dissertation will outline the research study that examined the transition process from the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center and Douglas County Youth Center back to school. The sample included staff from juvenile justice centers and youth who were placed in the facilities. Using qualitative methods, the current study analyzed the needs, barriers, and facilitators to the transition back to school as reported by staff and youth. Furthermore, recruitment methods were examined and a conceptual model for the transition back to school was created. Quantitative methods were used to examine the descriptive statistics of transition plans, school connectedness, and youth preparedness for the transition. The following section will report and analyze the results from the study in detail. Finally, implications, limitations, and future directions will be discussed to conclude the dissertation. |
