요약 | My dissertation uses data from an online survey I designed and disseminated in October 2017. Participation was limited to people 18 years old or older who identified on the ace spectrum and/or as members of the ace community (e.g. asexual, graysexual, demisexual, etc.). Over 1,500 people responded, making this the largest academic sample of ace spectrum individuals to date. While my project includes people who identify as asexual, I expand on existing asexuality scholarship by including other identities and experiences on the ace spectrum (e.g. graysexual, demisexual). In addition to multiple choice questions and scale, I included a number of open-ended text questions to collect qualitative data about respondents' attitudes and context for their responses. Throughout this project, I explore the heterogeneity of the ace community, and the way people on the ace spectrum challenge normative, compulsory sexuality. The five papers that comprise my dissertation discuss definitions of and desire for "sex," levels of desire, digital marginalia feedback, and parenting intentions. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the full survey sample. Chapter 2 discusses definitions of "sex," sexual history, and desire to engage in sex behaviors in the future. Chapter 3 analyzes scores on the Sexual Desire Inventory along with write-in responses about how respondents feel about their level of desire. Chapter 4 examines quantitative and qualitative data about parenting intentions in the ace community. Chapter 5 analyzes digital marginalia feedback from survey respondents and makes recommendations for improving research with the ace community. I conclude that the ace spectrum encompasses a diverse group of people, and that future research should continue to study asexual individuals, but also include other identity categories within this community. A better understanding of the asexual community and the ace spectrum helps further our understanding of human sexual diversity and calls into question what it means to be intimate, happy, and human. |
