요약 | This ethnographic project documents and analyses the activities and voices of members of the old-time stringband community in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This musical community comes together in various ways to play Appalachian stringband music, also known as old-time music, in large public jam sessions, in small living-room sessions, and for square-dances. Some within the community also perform old-time music professionally on stage in bars, concert halls, on tour, and at festivals. This music is created both as a participatory genre as well as a presentational one. This research documents a particularly heightened period of activity and dedication, showing how seriousness of intent from a community of practice can stand in for place-based heritage of musical traditions. Similarly, whereas old-time music is often considered to be born from community practices, this research shows how that same seriousness of intent in musical activity can create and bind a committed social community within a large urban context. This research will inform future studies of traditional music, old-time music, transnationalism within culture, Canadian studies, Appalachian studies, folklore, and ethnomusicology. The research was conducted between 2012-2014 in St. Catharines and Toronto, Ontario, and at the Appalachian Stringband Festival, also known as Clifftop, in Fayette County, West Virginia. |
