요약 | Expectations have important implications for how we interpret, approach, and evaluate our romantic relationships. The purpose of this two-paper dissertation was to explore the expected likelihoods (i.e., expectancies) of experiencing pleasure and emotional intimacy during sex with a romantic partner, and the role of these expectancies in relationship and sexual experiences, particularly sexual desire. The sample for both papers included young adults from a college campus (n = 290) and from an online crowdsourcing platform (n = 298) (~50% women). All study components were completed online. The first paper begins to establish foundational descriptive work about these sexual expectancies and their associations with insecure attachment styles and sexual experiences. Results from the first paper indicated that young adult women and men expect that sex with a romantic partner is highly likely to result in emotional closeness and sexual pleasure aside from orgasm. Men reported higher expectancies of orgasm, and lower expectancies of difficulty with orgasm, than women in both samples |
