요약 | The purpose of the study was to examine patterns in school discipline and reincarceration among students in juvenile correctional facility schools across a Midwestern state. The Department of Corrections, Juvenile Justice Division, provided the data that spanned over a five-year period, starting from September 2013 and ending in October 2018. The mean age for all participants was 16.5. Results showed that 52% of students were White, 32% were Black, and 7% were Latinx. The majority of participants were male (84%) and 42% of participants were students with disabilities. The primary findings of this study indicate that non-White students were more likely to receive discipline referrals and be suspended than White students, but that race was not a significant indicator of reincarceration. Female students received more discipline referrals and were reincarcerated more frequently than their male counterparts. Female students were suspended at rates similar to male students. Students with disabilities received office discipline referrals, were suspended, and were reincarcerated more frequently than their non-disabled counterparts. There were no statistically significant relationships between academic achievement and the likelihood of receiving discipline referrals, suspensions, or reincarcerations. This could imply that interventions specifically designed to target behaviors of students with disabilities may help improve outcomes for students with disabilities in both public school and correctional facility school settings. |
