요약In this dissertation, I use theories from social semiotics to examine how authors from the francophone Caribbean convey multimodal expression in their novels. More specifically, I argue that multimodality can be considered a form of relation (to borrow from Martinican theorist Edouard Glissant) that can help us situate selected 20th-century novels from the francophone Caribbean as precursors to a recent surge in creolophone publishing in Guadeloupe and Martinique.Although the linguistic and cultural activism of the Creolist movement has been essential to the increasing prevalence of printed works in Creole, such efforts have been bolstered by multimodal writing strategies that bridge the French-Creole divide. Today, multimodality can be found in creolophone publications from various genres and can especially be seen in creolophone comics, which combine the visual and linguistic modes of expression.Even if multimodality is not typically associated with "word-only" texts such as novels, the authors of my primary corpus incorporate references to multimodality through the content and structure of their works. The first two chapters of this dissertation focus on the novels La Danse sur le volcan and Celanire cou-coupe, in which multimodal artforms such as opera and gwoka figure prominently. In these works, written by Marie Vieux-Chauvet and Maryse Conde, respectively, multimodality can even be observed in the silences that emerge across various modes of expression. The second half of this thesis examines works by Ernest Pepin and Patrick Chamoiseau that encourage a multimodal interpretation from the reader through the use of visual and aural cues such as typographic variation and onomatopeia.Whether using multimodality as a plot point or as an aesthetic approach, the authors examined in this dissertation provide a foundation for addressing similar dynamics in other (post)colonial literatures and societies. From the integration of multimodal artforms within "word-only" texts to the relation between multimodal artforms and resistance, multimodality offers a tool for literary and cultural analysis that can be applied beyond the Caribbean and its diasporas.
