요약Previous research shows that political disagreement in communication networks can be beneficial for political tolerance but it is not necessarily good for political engagement. This dissertation examines the relationships between different forms of political disagreement and political tolerance and political engagement.Specifically, this dissertation focuses on addressing four main gaps in in the communication literature. First, this study re-conceptualizes exposure to political disagreement along the lines of political heterogeneity and political extremity. Second, this study examines how the intersection of political heterogeneity and political extremity in different forms of social networks may shape political engagement and political tolerance. Third, this study examines the affective and cognitive mechanisms that help explain the relationship between exposure to political disagreement and political tolerance and political engagement. Fourth, this project focuses on different forms of political disagreement in four social contexts: local communities, political conversations, broader networks of political talk, and Facebook networks. To investigate these gaps in the literature, this study uses a sample of the American adult population (N = 693). Three sets of analysis are presented in this study. First, descriptive analyses present an overall picture of political networks. Then, regression and mediation analysis provide us with insights about the relationship between a) types of political networks and political tolerance and b) types of political networks and political engagement. Based on these sets of results, normative implications and insights for theory building are explored.
