요약Substance use disorders are pervasive, with 8.16% of individuals in the United States meeting the criteria for abuse or dependence of either illicit drugs or alcohol in the past year. Research investigating the early predictors of substance use is needed to inform interventions designed to reduce problem use. Although family and school-based environmental factors are important in the development of substance abuse, gene-environment correlations (rGE), or the influence of a child's or parent's genetic predisposition on the child's rearing environment, may explain the association between putatively environmental variables and drug or alcohol abuse. The present study examined an adoption sample to distinguish between passive rGE, in which the child's environment is shaped by the parents' genetic characteristics, and early environmental influences that influence later substance use in order to increase understanding of the mechanisms underlying risk of substance use. Participants in the present study included 348 adopted and 445 non-adopted individuals from the Colorado Adoption Project. Early home environment and parental characteristics, including parental disinhibition, anxiety, antisocial behavior, job status, and education, were used independently as early predictors of substance use. A summary score of risk was also estimated and used as a composite measure of early environment. Overall, there was not consistent evidence supporting very early predictors of substance use. Gender differences in correlations and the role of environmental mediation versus passive rGE are discussed.
