요약 | The majority of research on goal pursuit suggests that the motivation to pursue a goal stems from the desirability of its end-state. My dissertation investigates an alternative source of motivation: a motivation for mere completion. I show that such a motivation can lead to the one-away effect that people counter-normatively value something nearly complete (e.g., a loyalty card with all but one stamp) more than something complete (a loyalty card with all stamps). This is because when something is nearly complete, people anticipate the utility of mere completion and factor it into their valuation of the object |
