요약 | Since 1965, the HCM has been using passenger car equivalents (PCEs) to convert trucks and other vehicles into an equal number of autos. However, a recent, nationally-sponsored project, identified the fact that this treatment fails to capture the full effect of trucks on the performance of freeways and other highway facilities. As a result, the Mixed Flow Model (MFM) was developed to estimate travel rates separately for autos and trucks for various freeway operating conditions. The model is described in chapters 25 and 26 of the HCM 6th Edition. One shortcoming of the MFM is that it was developed strictly based on simulation. This dissertation reports the results of efforts to validate the MFM's predictions. Data for flow rates, travel rates, truck percentages, and vertical profiles were collected for three locations in North Carolina plus secondary data from other locations nationwide. Speed-flow trends were examined |
